On Thursday, October 28th, 2021, AJ Cassavell announced Bob Melvin will be the new manager for the San Diego Padres, receiving a 3-year deal, worth 12 million dollars. Bob Melvin is the 22nd manager for the Padres in team history, but will he be the first to bring a World Championship to San Diego? Here's why I believe Melvin will be the first to get the World Series trophy into the Padres trophy case.
Respect
One of the most important things a manager needs from his players in order to succeed is respect. Bob Melvin is one of the most loved managers in the game; "As Dr. Seuss says...Don't cry because it's over, smile because it happened," Chris Bassitt, a pitcher on the Oakland Athletics, said about Bob Melvin's departure from Oakland. Bassitt also added, "10+ years Oakland was able to call Bob Melvin their manager. He's truly the best manager in the sport. Be grateful. I sure as hell am." Players and reporters all around the league, especially Oakland, loved Bob Melvin for the person he is, and the impact he has on the sport of Baseball.
Great Success
Along with being loved around the league, Melvin is also a great manager, posting a record of 1346 wins, and 1272 losses (.514%) in his 18 year career. Out of the 10 full years in Oakland (managed half of the 2011 season in Arizona) , he managed them to the playoffs 6 out of the 10 years. Melvin also never had an amazing roster. The Owner of the Oakland Athletics forbids to spend any money on the roster of the team, so Melvin sees fully developed players not resigning back with the team due to the lack of spent money on the roster. With Melvin joining a team who is open to spending a lot of money in the Padres, who knows the ability Bob Melvin can do with this talented roster. Melvin had a press conference today on November 1st, 2021, being introduced as the new manager for the Padres. He said one of the biggest reasons in becoming the manager for the Padres was their roster, stated in his introduction press conference. Melvin has also been able to help develop many of the young stars in Oakland due to his success. He gets high potential out of everyone in the lineup, which is why he has led the Athletics to the postseason many years without a strong roster.
Amazing Hire
AJ Preller, the general manager of the Padres, has hired back to back rookie managers (Andy Green, 2016-2019, and Jayce Tingler, 2020-2021) previously to the Melvin hire. Preller has also had only one winning season as the general manager for the Padres which was 2020, a shortened 60-game season. Preller hiring Bob Melvin to be the Padres manager for the next 3 years, may go down as the best hire in the franchise if Bob Melvin can accomplish his goal: winning a World Series as an MLB manager.
